“I need to get my life together,” Nellie says like she’s confiding some dark secret.

“I don’t know anyone who has it more together than you.” I chuckle softly.

“You say that, but—”

“Give me one example.”

“I haven’t done laundry in over a week.”

“Oh, no, not that.”

She elbows me, and I flinch in mock pain.

The thought of a Sunday drive crosses my mind, and I think I’m ready to share a bit more of my real life with Nellie.

She came to me; I can trust her with my secrets.

“Wanna go for a drive?” I ask.

“Where to?”

“I don’t know. That’s the thing about Sunday drives. You just go where the road leads you. No questions.”

“No questions?”

“Come on. Let’s get away.” I am blatantly disobeying my mom right now. I really have spent too much time in Sterling’s presence.

“I don’t know. My mom—” She cuts herself off, and the silence that follows presses us flat until Nellie inhales. “You know what? I don’t care.”

And clearly, I’m rubbing off on Nellie. “Okay. You want to change into something fresh?”

“And brush my teeth.” She covers her mouth with one hand.

“You could wear something of mine, if you want. And I’m sure I’ve got a new toothbrush around here somewhere.”

“Nothing of yours will fit me.”

“Sure it will. One word: drawstring.”

“That’s two.”

I shake my head. “It’s a compound word.”

She laughs through tight lips, but I see the spark, the one that brings her back to life. I grab my favorite Nike shirt and my gray joggers. Nellie waits on the couch, thumbing through her phone, and I hear my mom finishing up.
